Man and woman arrested in connection with May’s violent attack on a security van
Two people have been arrested in Belgium and France in connection with the armed robbery at a trading company in precious metals in Amsterdam in May.
Six men were arrested and one shot dead by police after the robbery on a van transporting gems and precious metals turned into a car chase to Broek in Waterland, north of Amsterdam.
Police said at the time they were still hunting at least two suspects.
A special team, set up under the auspices of Eurojust in The Hague, worked on the cross border case, resulting in Monday’s arrests.
The Belgian suspect, a 20-year-old woman was arrested at her home, Dutch police said. The French suspect, a 44-year-old man, was arrested on Monday. On Tuesday police raided a shop in Paris and searched the home of the French suspect.
The attack on the security van resulted in a high speed chase involving ten police vehicles which ended in a field. Five of the robbers made off on foot, after setting two of the getaway cars on fire. They were eventually picked up by police, by then reinforced with special armed units and a helicopter.
Most of the haul, valued at €14m, was recovered.
The Netherlands will now ask for the two suspects to be extradited to stand trial.
