The clocks go back one hour in the early hours of Sunday morning as the Netherlands and most of western Europe move into winter time.

The shift is also bringing a period of cool, wet weather, although there may be a little sunshine on Sunday and Monday. All week there will be rain, and the temperature will reach no higher than 12 or 13 Celsius, weather bureau KNMI said.

The clocks will go forward again on the last Sunday in March next year.

October was a warm month, with an average temperature of 11.6 Celsius, 0.7 of a degree up on a normal year. It was also wetter than average, particularly in the west, weather bureaus say.

There were no days with a temperature of over 20 Celsius, which means the official number of warm days at the De Bilt weather station in 2021 remains 98. Eindhoven, Volkel and Arcen had the best of the weather, with 110 days on which the temperature topped 20 Celsius.
