Footballer Steven Berghuis has made a formal police report after receiving dozens of serious threats since switching from Feyenoord to arch rival Ajax earlier this summer.

The Oranje international’s wife and children have also been threatened, the Telegraaf reported on Wednesday, after seeing the formal complaint, which included 19 pages of violent social media messages.

Berghuis, 29, completed his move to Ajax in July for an initial €4 million after reviving his career during a five-year spell at Feyenoord, during which he scored 87 goals in 199 games.

According to the Telegraaf, Berghuis has described some of messages he has received as ‘very threatening’ in his letter to the police. Ajax director Edwin van der Sar also said a ‘boundary has been crossed’.

Last month, Feyenoord itself to condemned a section of its fans for posting threats to the former club captain following the move.

The Rotterdam club singled out a banner that was photographed and shared on social media suggesting Berghuis deserved the same fate as Peter R. de Vries, the journalist who was shot dead in Amsterdam several weeks ago.
