Police shut down demonstration against Afghan refugee centre
Police shut down a small demonstration against a centre for refugees from Afghanistan in Ede late on Tuesday night.
The protest, in the army location of De Harskamp, was at first peaceful but then some 250 demonstrators reportedly began to sing nationalist songs, and set alight tyres.
Some 50 or 60 police officers and dogs were sent to break up the demonstration, but nobody was arrested.
Around 800 refugees from Afghanistan will take refuge at an army barracks in the town, first quarantining for coronavirus reasons, and the first arrived yesterday afternoon.
