Dutch men live up to their favourite status with team sprint gold
The Dutch men’s team sprint cycling team delivered on their favourite status by taking the gold medal on Tuesday morning.
Britain, initially in contention for the title, lost contact during the race as the Dutch powered ahead in a new Olympic record time of 41.369. The French trio took bronze.
The Netherlands has dominated the team sprint event for the past few years, taking the world title in 2018, 2019 and 2020.
The last gold medal for the Dutch on the indoor track was in 1936, when Arie van Vliet won the 1,000 metres in Berlin, according to news website Nu.nl.
Tuesday’s medals – including the sailing bronze earlier in the day – take the Dutch medal haul to 20, one more than their score in Rio in 2016.
