An anonymous group of far right agitators calling themselves Vizier op Links – literally ‘sights on the left’ – have been visiting the homes of a number of high-profile left-wing writers and leaving threatening messages behind.

Leiden University historian Nadia Bouras and GroenLinks campaigner Huub Bellemakers are among the people who have been confronted with a sticker on their front door, stating that their home is ‘under observation’.

Bouras said that she sometimes entered into discussions on Twitter but that going to someone’s home, and ‘encroaching on their private sphere’ is taking this a step further. ‘My children saw it, and were shocked by my reaction,’ she said.

Bouras is planning to make a formal police complaint.

Bellemakers said he found the sticker two weeks ago and had decided to keep it quiet at the time, so as not to give the makers any publicity. ‘I’m going public now because Nadia has done so, and to show she is not alone,’ Bellemakers said.

Bellemakers hit the headlines after comparing a meeting of the far right Forum voor Democratie in Nijmgen to a Nazi gathering.

Socialist MPs have now filed questions with the home affairs and justice ministries to find out how vocal critics of the far right can be protected.
