MPs have called for a police investigation into possible leaks surrounding the legal case around Argentine pilot Julio Poch, who spent eight years in jail before being found not guilty of carrying out death flights during the junta era.

An official report on the case concluded that there was no political involvement but did raise the strange case of a phone call from someone claiming to be a member of the then-queen’s staff.

The report states that in 2007 an unidentified woman who said she was a member of the queen’s cabinet phoned the public prosecutor to ask him if the case was really necessary,  ‘because it was painful for Máxima’.

Now queen, Máxima is Argentine by birth and her father was a member of the military junta.

However, the public prosecutor failed to ask for the woman’s name and the commission could not ascertain if she was indeed a member of the queen’s office.

A majority of MPs have now backed calls for an official investigation into a possible leak, given that the case against Poch was only known to a few people in 2007.

Meanwhile, Poch and his legal team say they will press ahead with his claim against the government for its role in his arrest and deportation.

They also point out that Poch himself was not interviewed for the government report.
