With two days to go, just fourteen people died a violent death in Amsterdam this year, according to calculations by the Parool.

The figure is the lowest in decades, the paper said. Last year there were 21 violent deaths and in 2018, 15. The capital’s murder rate has hovered between 15 and 25 for the past 10 years.

The total includes several drugs-related deaths and several in which ‘arguments about nothing cost lives’, such as that of Bas van Wijk, shot dead when he defended a friend who was being threatened over his fake Rolex.

The total also includes the death of German influencer Sammy Seewald, shot dead by police in an incident which is still being investigated.

Eight of the deaths involved guns, and in two cases, the victims were stabbed.

The Parool calculations also include this week’s murder suicide in the east of the city, in which a single father shot dead his 14 year-old daughter and then turned his gun on himself.
