Riot police were brought in to break up a party held in a marquee in Nieuw-Vennep on Saturday night, which was attended by some 80 people in their 40s and 50s.

The tent had been placed in a field at the back of the house and surrounded by fencing, which made it difficult for officials to reach, news website Nu.nl said.

Local safety board chief Marianne Schuurmans said on Twitter that this was the third large party broken up by police in the Haarlemmermeer region in recent days. ‘It is unacceptable from a public health perspective and from that of local cafes and bars which have had to close,’ Schuurmans said.

In Limburg, police were also called to end a party in a warehouse, where 25 people were ticketed. Other events were stopped in Hoofddorp, Amstelveen and Maastricht.

The organisers of illegal events face a fine of €4000, guests €95.
