Pensioners top rich list as property continues to boost household assets
Property continues to boost the average assets held by Dutch households, which reached a median of €49,800 by the beginning of last year, according to new figures from national statistics agency CBS.
Median means that half of all households had assets below this figure and half had more.
The rise is €12,000 over the year, the CBS said, and takes average assets to above the level in 2008 at the start of the previous financial crisis. Excluding property, average assets amounted to just over €15,000 last year, up a fraction on 2018.
Household assets are largely dependent on age and those with the most tend to be made up of people over the age of 65. The median assets of pensioner households in 2019 was €142,600, and around 14% had assets of more than €500,000, the CBS said.
Some 50% of Dutch households own their own home and pensioners are most likely to have paid off their mortgages.
