Summer storm Francis brought down trees and damaged buildings in the west of the country as it raced across coastal areas on Wednesday morning, bringing gales and heavy rain.

Wind speeds of 107kph were recorded at IJmuiden, broadcaster RTL Nieuws said, as the KNMI weather bureau issued a code yellow weather alarm.

In The Hague, a woman was taken to hospital after she was hit by a falling tree, and part of a building under construction collapsed, scattering debris across the street.

In Heerhugowaard, in Noord-Holland, scaffolding detached from a building and crashed into the street, and in Rotterdam, two cars were hit by falling trees, local media reported.

The winds are expected to die down during the day, but will remain storm force in the Wadden Sea islands until the late afternoon.
