Refugee support group urges minister to protect LGBT asylum seekers
A support group for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender asylum seekers has received over 60 reports of violence against LGBT refugees since the beginning of June, RTL news said on Friday.
The foundation, Stichting LGBT Asylum Support, has now written to junior justice Ankie Broekers-Knol urging her to intervene, the broadcaster said.
The safety of LGBT asylum seekers hit the headlines earlier this month when two refugees from Nigeria were arrested after throwing boiling water over a woman in refugee centre in Gilze. She was in a relationship with another woman at the centre.
LGBT refugees also regularly subject to aggression and bullying, the foundation said.
The foundation has campaigned for years for separate living accommodation for LGBT refugees, particularly people who are transgender.
