Just one in 10 users of online food delivery service Thuisbezorgd makes use of the option to give a tip, broadcaster NOS reported on Monday.

The company introduced digital tipping in May, but says most clients still give cash. ‘Cash tipping is what we have done for years, although we do expect online tipping to replace it,’ spokesman Joris Wilton told the broadcaster. ‘We are using less cash and coronavirus is speeding up the process.’

Deliveroo, which introduced digital tipping four years ago, says one in five of its clients use the option.

In cafes and restaurants, about half of customers leave a tip, according to Edwin Vlek of hospitality sector union FNV Horeca. ‘Customers are prepared to give tips, but there are fewer triggers to do so when making digital payments,’ he said.

‘And it is not like in America, where serving staff depend on tips,’ he said. ‘In the Netherlands people have a wage and tips are an extra. You don’t want to make the customer responsible for your poor level of pay.’
