Don’t rely on your sat nav, drivers warned as 100km limit comes into force
The new daytime motorway speed limit of 100 km/h has come into force from Monday with highways operator Rijkswaterstaat warning that not all navigation systems will warn drivers of the change.
The lower limit, which will apply between 6am and 7pm, was due to be implemented on January 1, but the government said more time was needed to install speed limit signs. On motorways where the boards were installed earlier the limits have been in force since the weekend.
The reduced limit is part of a package of measures to reduce nitrogen emissions in response to a judgment by the Council of State in May. The agriculture and construction sectors are also having to implement stricter emissions controls to comply with European conservation laws.
The higher limit of 120km/h or 130km/h will still apply between 7pm and 6am.
Navigation systems operators including TomTom and Google Maps have said the new speed limits will be included in their apps from Monday, but other systems may not reflect the differences between daytime and evening. Cars with in-built navigation software may have to be taken back to the dealer.
Rijkswaterstaat said the change would affect around around 80% of motorways and around 4000 new signs had been installed.
