Rotterdam cocaine seizures hit 28 tonnes, mayor calls for more investigators
Police and customs officials working at Rotterdam port have seized 28 tonnes of cocaine so far this year – well above the 19 tonnes found in 2018 and a new record, city mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb has said.
He wants the government to invest more police money strengthening a special team focusing on the drugs trade via the port. The squad currently has a workforce of 50.
The Telegraaf reported earlier that this year’s total includes 15 ‘major hauls’ of 500 kg, with the largest single shipment of 3,000 kg recovered in August.
The prosecution service publishes official figures at the end of each year. The final amount for 2019 is likely to be much higher as November and December are usually the peak season for cocaine smuggling.
