Eight Dutch players – five men and three women – have been nominated for the Golden Ball player of the year awards.

Virgil van Dijk, Frenkie de Jong, Matthijs de Ligt, Georginio Wijnaldum and Donny van de Beek make the men’s shortlist of 30. In the women’s competition, Vivianne Miedema, Lieke Martens and Sari van Veenendaal are in the 20-strong race for the top prize, which is being awarded for the second time this year.

The Golden Ball is organised by French football magazine France Football and football journalists from all over the world are invited to vote on the winners.

Miedema, Martens and Van Veenendaal reached the final of the women’s World Cup competition last summer, but lost in the final to the US.
