Dutch airline KLM has cancelled six flights and warned passengers of delays because of a second strike by ground crew. Eleven flights were cancelled on Monday because of strike action and there was a knock-on effect throughout the day.

The strike, from 8am to 10am, will lead to problems with a total of 62 flights, the airline told broadcaster RTL Nieuws. Passengers are being urged to travel with hand luggage only to avoid delays.

The FNV union has called the strike after a deadline to reach a new pay agreement expired on Friday. The union’s demands include an 4% pay rise per year, more full-time contracts and a more regular shift rota. KLM has offered a 6% rise over three years.

The airline has advised passengers to follow developments online and has described the strike as ‘incomprehensible and unnecessary’.

The FNV said 80% of staff would take part in the strike action, causing delays to baggage handling, refuelling and maintenance. There will also be limited catering options while the strike continues, KLM said.
