Dutch football association shows red card to smokers
Smoking is to be banned throughout Dutch football stadiums from 2020, the Dutch football association said on Wednesday.
Amsterdam football club Ajax, Vitesse of Arnhem and Almere City have already banned smoking in their complexes and now the rest of the Eredivisie and first division clubs will follow suit. PSV is introducing a ban in the coming season.
A ban on smoking will be introduced at all 3,000 amateur clubs from 2025. The campaign, which includes a special website, is part of the KNVB’s support for the Nederland Rookvrij alliance.
Despite smoking being banned at the Johan Cruijff stadium since 2008, stewards have a great deal of trouble enforcing the ban and last year the club was fined €2,400 for failing to comply with the regulations, broadcaster AT5 said.
