Dutch king invites Trump to WWII battle 75-year ceremony
King Willem-Alexander has invited US president Donald Trump to the Netherlands to commemorate the Battle of the Scheldt, a crucial part of WWII history which took place 75 years ago in August, the state information service has confirmed.
During the battle allied troops opened up the shipping route to Antwerp so the port could be used to supply allied forces in north-west Europe – a move which was crucial for the liberation of Belgium and the Netherlands.
It is not yet clear if Trump will attend the ceremony on August 31, which makes the invitation unusual, broadcaster NOS said. Usually invitations are only extended when there are indications that they will be accepted.
Trump’s daughter Ivanka will be in the Netherlands in early June for the Global Entrepreneurship Summit in The Hague.
