Lucas and Julia win ground to become most popular baby names
Lucas and Julia top the latest baby name list put together by the social insurance bank SVB. It compiles the ranking on the basis of applications for child benefits.
Of the 86,631 boys born last year, 681 were given the name Lucas, which was third on the list in 2017. And 797 of the 82,503 girls were called Julia, which was fourth in 2017.
Emma, Sophie, Tess and Zoe complete the top 5 list of favourite names for girls. Levi, Finn, Sem and Noah follow Lucas in the boys list.
The SVB says there are notable regional differences. Lieke, for example, tops the list for girls in Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe while Jan and Liam are favourite for boys in Zeeland and Flevoland. None of these names make the national top 10.
Last year the SVB opted to only publish names which were given at least 25 times, to avoid the annual focus on strange names. These have included in the past such gems as Danley-Maikeljunior, Svastika, Shoe-Jainely, Divinepraise and Bentley-Maxim.
