Amsterdam city council’s efforts to reduce the number of fast food outlets in the city took a new twist on Friday with the news that Dunkin’ Donuts is now attempting to open a branch in a building where New York Pizza was banned.

The AD says that Dunkin’ Donuts has already started renovating the property on the Ferdinand Bolstraat, even though it has no licence to open.

In February, judges ruled that the New York Pizza group is a fast food chain, not a restaurant, so preventing it from starting up near the new metro stop. Council zoning laws rule out allowing fast food outlets in the area.

Amsterdam has now confirmed that it has received a licencing application for the same location from the doughnut shop, the AD said, and that means legal proceedings are likely to restart.

Meanwhile, a fishmongers on the city’s Leidsestraat has said it plans to go to court in an effort to have a council closure order overturned.

City officials said the shop was too tourist-orientated because it sold fried fish to take away and ordered it to close down.
