A majority of MPs do not back allowing more flights to take off and land at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport, it emerged during Tuesday’s debate on the future of Dutch airports.

The existing agreement states that there will be no more than 500,000 flight movements a year at Schiphol up to 2021, but that ceiling is likely to be reached this year.

Plans to spin off charter flights to Lelystad airport have been put on hold because of noise and airspace issues. Lelystad will not now open to commercial traffic before 2020.

Although the VVD is keen to break open the existing agreement, the three other coalition parties are opposed and want to wait until 2021. ‘It is simply not going to happen until then,’ D66 MP Jan Paternotte said during the debate.
