A 600 kilo World War II sea mine found on the bottom of the IJ waterway in eastern Amsterdam has been successfully removed from the sea bed and blown up.
The mine was found earlier this year during dredging work and returned to the IJ while arrangements were made to dispose of it safely.
The mine was taken under the supervision of police and transport ministry officials to the Markermeer where it was detonated, sending a plume of water high into the sky.
During the journey, the Oranjesluizen sluice gates were closed, as was the main tunnel over the IJ and the Schellingwouder bridge. Air traffic was also diverted.
