Just one day after public transport smart card company Translink pulled the plug on an experiment allowing passenger to pay to travel by mobile phone, another scheme is in the pipeline, the AD said on Wednesday.

The trial, which will involve the big banks, plus Mastercard and Visa, will run on HTM trams in The Hague and on the train from Leiden to The Hague from this summer. Similar systems, allowing users to pay directly by bank card or phone, are already running in London, the AD said.

‘We were planning to start this spring but we’ve decided to take more time to get it ready, given the failure of the other experiment,’ a spokesman for payment system group Betaalvereniging Nederland said.

Translink ditched its experiment, saying it had turned out to be too complicated and passenger-unfriendly.
