The British embassy in The Hague is organising several meetings with British nationals in the Netherlands ‘in preparation for the UK’s exit from the EU’.

Currently officials have four meetings planned, in Eindhoven, Maastricht, Amsterdam and The Hague. The meetings, described as ‘open forums’ will take place this month.

According to Dutch statistics office CBS, there are almost 85,000 Brits in the Netherlands (compared with 73,000 Dutch nationals in the UK). British expats make up around 1% of the population in cities such as Amsterdam.

Clarifying the rights of British nationals in the Netherlands and the rest of Europe and EU nationals in Britain should be a top priority in the forthcoming talks on Britain’s withdrawal from Europe, Britain’s minister for Europe David Jones told DutchNews.nl in April.

Britain will protect the rights of EU nationals living in the UK and the European Commission should look after the rights of British nationals living in the Netherlands, Jones said in an interview in Amsterdam.
