NL second-largest avocado importer, but 80% is re-exported

The Netherlands is the world’s second-largest importer of avocados but 79% of the import is re-exported to end-users mostly in Europe, the national statistics office CBS  reported on Monday.

But avocados are increasing in popularity in the Netherlands as well, with Dutch consumption at 49 million kilos in 2016 up from only 10 million kilos in 2008.

Mexico remains by far the largest producer of avocados, but most of these are sold in the US. Avocados moved through the Netherlands are mostly from Peru, Chile and South Africa.

The CBS said the Dutch import of avocados reached a record €433m last year, roughly one-third of the US import of the green fruit. Dutch imports of bananas, oranges and melons also increased in 2016, but the import of apples fell off sharply.
