All at sea? Rutte and Pechtold discuss the formation problems at a beach bar
VVD leader Mark Rutte and D66’s Alexander Pechtold met for informal talks at a beach bar near The Hague on Wednesday to discuss the deadlock in the cabinet formation talks.
Rutte skipped out of the regular cabinet meeting to meet Pechtold in private, after D66 was blamed for rejecting Christian party ChristenUnie. ‘They were very nice. It all seemed very good humoured,’ Marco Seitz, owner of Schevening beach bar Werelds told RTL news.
On Tuesday D66 and ChristenUnie said they would not work together to form a new government together with the CDA and VVD, leaving chief negotiator Edith Schippers without a majority government option.
Schippers said earlier on Wednesday that she would not finalise her report on her latest attempt to build a working coalition but has asked party leaders to be available on Friday for further talks.
