Gold medal hopeful Dafne Schippers had to settle for silver in the 200m on Wednesday night. The race was won by her arch-rival Elaine Thompson of Jamaica, who finished 21.78, 0.1 of a second head of Schippers. Tori Bowie of the US took bronze.

‘This is terrible, I really can’t enjoy it,’ the 24-year-old, who holds the world 200m title, said. After lying on the track for some time, Schippers got up, took of her spikes and threw them to one side in frustration.

‘I came here to win,’ she said. ‘I felt super good and I don’t know what happened.

Earlier Schippers failed to win a medal in the 100m.

There was good news on the athletics track elsewhere when Churandy Martina reached the final of the mens’ 200m. It is the third Olympics in a row that he has qualified for the 200m final.

Hockey

The Dutch women’s hockey team managed to beat Germany on penalties after the game ended 1-1 in regular time. The defending champions will meet Great Britain in the final.

Middleweight boxer Nouchka Fontijn is assured of at least a bronze medal after beating Britain’s Savannah Marshall in the semi-finals. The two times European champion will meet Li Qian from China for a final place on Friday.

The team showjumping event turned into a major disappointment for the Dutch who failed to win a medal, despite high initial hopes. The gold went to France. The Netherlands are reigning world champions at the event. The individual show jumping takes place on Friday.

The Netherlands are currently ninth in the medals table with eight gold, four silver and three bronze.
