Family of youth shot dead accuse police of his murder
The family of the 17-year-old youth shot dead by police on Hollands Spoor railway station last month have formally accused the police of his murder.
The family have gone to the public prosecution service demanding the case is heard in court, whatever the outcome of the formal investigation into the killing, Nos television reported.
Rishi Chandrikasing died in hospital after being shot by armed police officers in the early hours of the morning.
‘The seriousness of the case is clear,’ the family’s lawyer Michel van Stratum is quoted as saying. ‘Rishi was a minor, he had never been convicted of a firearms offence… he did not threaten the police with a gun and yet he was shot.’
In addition, the family has no confidence in the investigation being led by The Hague public prosecution department because of its close ties to the police, Van Stratum said.
Threat
The family also want to bring charges against the person who told the police Chandrikasing had threatened them with a gun, because it was a false claim and led to the shooting.
The public prosecution department confirmed the family had made formal complaints. The department also said a second investigation had begun into the leaking of information about the youth’s alleged criminal record.
Shortly after the shooting there were claims in the media that the youth had been charged with involvement in a stabbing incident. But the charges were dropped and should never have been made public.
