David and Jonathan is by Rembrandt

The painting of David and Jonathan held in the Hermitage museum in St Petersburg can be attributed to Rembrandt after all, the Volkskrant reports on Wednesday.

The authenticity of the painting was called into doubt in 1989, when the Rembrandt Research Project placed it in the category ‘not authentic’.
But now Anna Tummers of the Frans Hals museum in Haarlem says in a doctoral thesis that it is by the Dutch painter. Tummers bases her claim on looking at the arguments used by art historians in the 20st century and comparing them to 17th century evidence.
The painting, signed and dated in 1642, was first owned by an art collecting compatriot of Rembrandt. ‘He was a collector with a very good reputation,’ Tummers was quoted by the paper as saying.
