Podcasts galore: From English-language Dutch news to art and useful advice
Radio is back and the number of podcasts out there has been growing steadily for years. The Netherlands is no exception and while there are plenty of Dutch-language podcasts, there are also plenty of English-language ones as well. Here’s a roundup of podcasts, in English, about the Netherlands.
DutchNews.nl jumped on the podcasting bandwagon years ago and Molly Quell, Gordon Darroch and Paul Peeters take you through the week’s news and, most importantly, the week’s ophefs. The podcast is released every week on Friday afternoon. As far as we know, it’s the only podcast with an official podcast dog, Trouby. Find it on SoundCloud and other podcasting apps:
Hosted by Lily-Anne Stroobach, a South African editor and producer, Dutch Buzz covers news in The Hague. The show is broadcast live on Den Haag FM 92.0 every Tuesday from 22:00 to 23:00. You can also find the show on their website:
Amsterdam has its own English-language radio as well. Broadcast Amsterdam is on twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. It is run by volunteers and has a variety of shows, from news to music. If you think you’ve got a face for radio, they are also looking for more help and you can find out about that on their website:
The Maastricht Edition describes itself as a magazine radio show, focusing on international and expat interests and issues in the Maastricht region. It’s part of RTV Maastricht and broadcasts between 19:00 and 21:00 every Thursday but you can get the episodes on their website:
If you’re in the Eindhoven region, Radio4Brainport is a twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week online radio station. They’ve got news, events and information for internationals in the area. You can find their shows on their website:
For those internationals living up north, The Northern Times just started a news podcast. Called Econ 050, it covers business and economic issues in and around Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe.
‘The podcast in English about life with the Dutch’ is how Here in Holland bills itself. Started by former RNW radio producer, Andy Clark, Here in Holland tells the stories of internationals in the Netherlands, gives you advice and tips on living here and talks to all sorts of interesting people.
Mokumista is brought to you by food writer Karin Engelbrecht and radio reporter/producer Lauren Comiteau. It explores the eating scene in Amsterdam with trends, reviews and openings. The podcast is available in iTunes.
Affiliated with ArtTalk Magazine, Arts Talks Radio covers art in the Randstad. They discuss a wide variety of topics, from poetry to paintings and bring you reviews, event information and stories about art and art-related topics.
Currently on hiatus, The Amsterdam Mamas Podcast has an entire backlog of interesting and informative podcasts about life in Amsterdam, focused on parents and parenting issues. They are hoping to return in the autumn. Find the archive, and new episodes in the future, on their website.
Jive Talking doesn’t cover the Netherlands specifically, but its host, David Zetland, lives in Amsterdam. He’s an assistant professor in economics at Leiden University College and he started the podcast so he could talk to interesting people. Previous episodes have talked about space, sustainability and human rights, frequently featuring people who live or are from the Netherlands.
Guided, a podcast hosted by Susan de Vriend, describes itself as ‘a collection of interviews with women who followed their hearts’. She moved to the Netherlands for love and now coaches people on how to do the same thing.
WordUp is a ‘movement that celebrates and inspires self-expression through spoken word poetry and related musical and/or performance expression’. To that end, organisation produces the WordUp podcast, which interviews people involved in the poetry and spoken word scene in Amsterdam and around the world.
HR Matters is the podcast arm of HR Communcatie,a platform that encourages HR and communication professionals to talk to each other. Though it’s a mostly Dutch language platform, they produce an English-language podcast which discusses HR issues from a Dutch perspective.
