Thousands remember victims of Berlin Pride attack in Amsterdam

Thousands turned out in Amsterdam on Tuesday evening to lay flowers and commemorate the victims of an attack on Pride in Berlin.

At the weekend, a man drove a car into the crowd gathered in the German capital for the closing of Pride. One woman was killed and 29 others were injured.

The commemoration began with a moment of silence at the Homomonument, the national memorial to the victims of persecution for their sexual orientation, and attendees laid flowers at the memorial.

Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema addressed the crowd, calling for courage and resilience. “We will win if we keep spreading hope loud and clear,” she said.

Many people are in the Dutch capital for Pride, which began on Saturday and has been combined with WorldPride for the first time. The famous canal parade will take place on August 1.

In other cities, groups also gathered to pay their respects. In Arnhem, a minute of silence was observed and the flag above city hall was flown at half-mast.

On Wednesday evening, there will be a gathering at Domplein in Utrecht.

On Sunday, German authorities killed the man suspected of carrying out the attack. He has been named as 21-year-old Abdul B. and was known to the police. He had already been convinced of violent threats and had previously travelled to Syria in an effort to join the Islamic State.
