Sky-high airport prices putting budget travellers off Schiphol

Passengers at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport pay far more for parking, taxis and hospitality than people using neighbouring airports, prompting some budget airlines to switch to Brussels or Düsseldorf instead.

Parking a car for three days at the weekend will set drivers back €95.50, compared to €70 in Düsseldorf, €55.33 in Eindhoven and €54 in Brussels, an analysis by website Vliegveld.info has found.

Even stopping at a bar while waiting for your gate to be called can burn a hole in your pocket in Amsterdam, where the average cup of coffee costs €4.90 compared to €3.40 in Düsseldorf. Prices for beer start at €5 for a small glass, while passengers in Eindhoven and Rotterdam pay €3.50.

The extra costs can wipe out savings made when booking tickets, Frank Radstake of Dutch travel trade association ANVR told the Telegraaf.

“It’s a remarkable fact that travellers are often prepared to change provider when they’re booking to save 10 euros or less, but once at the airport their critical attitude to finances seems to be completely forgotten,” he said.

Turkish-based airline Corendon has moved some flights to regional airports across the border to attract holiday passengers who are put off by the high prices at Schiphol, a spokesman said.

“If you can park your car more easily and save money by driving a few extra kilometers, it’s a quick calculation,” a spokesman told the Telegraaf.

A taxi to the city centre is also far more expensive in Amsterdam, costing an average €68.50 for the nine-kilometre journey, compared to €55 in Brussels and €28 in Düsseldorf. All three also have direct train links to the centre, which are much cheaper.

Schiphol’s higher prices reflect its size and complexity – the airport carries around 70 million passengers a year – and the €1.4 billion cost of extending the A pier, which is due to be completed in 2027.

The airport also unveiled a new logo this week, incorporating its IATA airport code AMS, highlighted by a red circle.

Chief commercial officer Arthur Reijnhart said: “We are making the airport accessible and recognisable again and restoring calm to the travel experience. This is an important step towards becoming a quality airport.”
