Hot air balloon passenger injured in hard landing in field

One person has been injured after a hot air balloon made a hard landing in a field in Groningen province.
The victim was conscious but needed hospital treatment after the accident in Numero Dertien, a hamlet outside Veendam, on Monday evening.
Several other people were on board the balloon, but escaped unhurt. A fire service spokesman said there appeared to be no technical defects with the balloon. “It was a planned landing that didn’t go entirely to plan,” he said.
Two weeks ago a 66-year-old woman died and five other people were injured when a hot air balloon crash-landed in a field in Friesland.
The crash on that occasion was blamed on a strong gust of wind near the ground just as the balloon was touching down in De Hoeve, near Heerenveen.
On Monday the safety council OVV published new guidance for hot air balloon flights to reduce the risk of accidents at take-off.
It followed an investigation into a crash two years ago in which a passenger was injured when a gust of wind blew the basket along the ground as it was preparing to take off.
The OVV said the “fit to fly” declaration and safety protocols were focused too much on the flight itself and not the dangers around take-off. Passengers must climb into the basket unaided and ensure their weight is well distributed when the balloon leaves the ground.
