Tata Steel in IJmuiden is preparing a major reorganisation that could result in the loss of 1,600 full-time jobs, news agency ANP reported on Wednesday. If confirmed, this would amount to a 20% reduction in the company’s workforce.

The company, which is part of Indian conglomerate Tata Steel Limited, has so far declined to comment on the report but has said it will issue a statement later in the day.

Tata Steel, which has come under sustained criticism and legal action from environmental and health campaigners, recorded a loss of €556 million in its 2023–2024 financial year. Steel producers in Europe have been hit particularly hard by high energy prices and are also likely to feel the impact of US steel tariffs.

At the end of 2023, the company announced plans to cut 800 jobs as part of a reorganisation, but the proposal was shelved after protests from staff.
