Right-wing MPs again try to halt sex change legislation

Right-wing and far-right MPs have again voted in favour of a motion calling on the cabinet to withdraw draft legislation which would make it easier for someone to legally change their registered sex.
The motion, drawn up by the fundamentalist Protestant SGP, along with far right parties JA21 and FvD, was supported by three of the four caolition parties, giving it majority backing in the lower house of parliament. The VVD voted against.
An earlier vote, before the current right-wing cabinet was sworn in, also won majority support.
The legislation gives transgender people the right to change the sex listed on their birth certificate to M or V, but not X without an expert’s statement.
The law will also reduce the age at which someone can apply to formally change the way their sex is registered from 18 to 16, without the intervention of a judge.
It is up to the current cabinet to decide whether or not to proceed with the legislation.
