Government urges people to avoid Randstad during Nato summit

The government is warning people in the Netherlands to avoid the central Randstad region between Monday 23 June and Wednesday 26 June due to major traffic disruption caused by the Nato summit in The Hague.
The summit will take place on 24 and 25 June, and thousands of delegates, including world leaders and ministers, are expected to attend. Because they will need to travel between Schiphol airport and The Hague, road users face “serious disruption” due to road closures, traffic jams and diversions, officials said.
People are being urged to work from home as much as possible on those days and to use public transport if they need to travel.
There will be no impact on the railways, although trains are likely to be busier than usual. Some bus and tram services will, however, be affected.
Drivers in The Hague have already been warned to expect disruption on one of the main routes in and out of the city, as preparations begin.
The Johan de Wittlaan, which connects Scheveningen to the Hubertustunnel and the A44 towards Amsterdam, is already closed in one direction and will shut completely from 14 April for four months.
Airline KLM said last month it plans to seek compensation because of the summit, which will lead to a reduction in airport capacity. The summit, combined with runway maintenance, will result in a temporary 20% cut in flights.
Around 8,500 people are expected to travel to the Netherlands for the summit, most of whom will arrive via Schiphol by private jet.
The government has said it is setting up a central register where companies and institutions can report problems caused by the disruption, although no decision has yet been made about compensation.
