The Netherlands beat Austria 3-1 for the second time in five days to set up a showdown with Germany to decide who proceeds to the semi-finals of the UEFA Nations League.

Vivienne Miedema scored her 97th international goal less than 10 minutes after coming on as a substitute, but went off shortly afterwards after pulling up with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

Coach Andries Jonker, said the latest setback for the country’s top scorer, who underwent knee surgery in October, was a blow with just three months to go until the start of the European Championships in Switzerland.

“When a player comes out of such a tough period, you hope that at some point it’s over. It’s incredibly hard and disappointing when it turns out to be otherwise,” Jonker said.

The coach had said before the match in Altach that it was a “strange feeling” to have a fully fit squad to choose from, although Lize Kop replaced Daphne van Domselaar in goal following the latter’s ankle injury.

The Dutch, who beat their opponents 3-1 in Almelo on Friday, went behind early on when Julia Hickelsberger deflected a cross inside Kop’s near post, after a mix-up between Esmee Brugts and Victoria Pelova allowed the Austrians to counter.

Penalty claim

But the lead lasted less than a minute, as Wieke Kaptein’s shot from outside the area looped off a defender and past Manuela Zinsberger.

Shortly before half-time Lineth Beerensteyn had an appeal for a penalty turned down when she weaved her way into the penalty area before going down under a challenge as she shaped to shoot.

Oranje took the lead just before the hour mark when a long-range shot by Pelova rebounded off the right-hand post into the path of Daniƫlle van de Donk, who nodded the ball into an empty net.

Miedema came on shortly afterwards and had an immediate impact when she took a long pass on the left-hand side, pulled back from the byline and lashed the ball into the top right-hand corner.

The result leaves the Netherlands level on 10 points with group leaders Germany, who thrashed Scotland 6-1 in Wolfsburg. The top two nations will meet in Germany on May 30, before the Dutch finish their campaign with a home match against Scotland four days later.
