Dutch master chef Jonnie Boer has died at the age of 60, his family announced on social media.

A spokesman for the family told the Telegraaf that Boer died on the Caribbean island of Bonaire following a pulmonary embolism.

Boer was the owner of De Librije in Zwolle, the only restaurant in the Netherlands with three Michelin stars.

He began his career in Amsterdam at the age of 17 and had been cooking at De Librije since 1987. In 1993, he took over the restaurant together with his wife Thérèse, and it was awarded its first Michelin star. The second followed in 1999 and the third in 2004.

The couple also own several other restaurants, and their children, along with De Librije chef Nelson Tanate, are partners in the food business.

In February, Boer told the Telegraaf that it was time to take a step back after years of hard work. “It is great that something we have worked on for 35 years can stay in the family,” he told the paper at the time.
