Dutch AEX plunges as global markets react to US tariffs

Amsterdam’s blue-chip AEX index plunged 6.25% in early trading on Monday morning as stock markets around the world continued to react to US president Donald Trump’s import tariffs.
The FTSE 100 opened down 5.18%, the Paris bourse CAC by 6.98%, and Frankfurt’s DAX fell 7.42%.
The opening decline pushed the AEX below 800 points, with financial and tech stocks among the hardest hit, alongside Shell. The Amsterdam Midkap fell 6% and the small-cap exchange dropped almost 4%.
EU trade ministers are meeting in Brussels on Monday to discuss Europe’s response to the tariffs.
On Friday, Dutch prime minister Dick Schoof called for restraint, stating that while there is broad agreement on the need to avoid escalation, “we are prepared to take steps in order to protect our economic interests.”
