Police announced on Saturday they arrested three men in connection with the massive blaze in Arnhem which destroyed 10 buildings in the city centre last week.

Two of the men, a 30-year-old and a 57-year-old, are from Arnhem and a third 41-year-old man has no registered address.

The fire broke out shortly before 4 am on Thursday at the SoLow store on the city’s Jansstraat, close to the Korenmarkt. In total, 10 shops and 30 flats located above them have been affected. No one was killed.

Some 150 firefighters were involved in the battle to control the blaze, which spread easily between the buildings because of their wooden frames.

Arnhem police said in Friday that they were investigating the possibility the fire was caused by arson.

The night before the fire broke out at the back of budget retailer, there was another blaze in a furniture shop on the outskirts of the city. Both outlets are owned by the same investment company, and a possible link between the two fires is now being investigated.

The trio are only allowed contact with their lawyer.

Several crowdfunding campaigns have been set up to support the residents and businesses who have been put out by the disaster.
