The roof of Amsterdam offers views across the city, 216 steps up

A viewing platform placed on the roof of the Nieuwe Kerk in the heart of Amsterdam opens to the public on Friday, offering panoramic views across the city.
The platform has been placed on the roof for the restoration of the church spire, but officials have decided to open it to the public, as part of the celebrations of Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary.
Visitors will reach the platform via a 17th century stairwell built for a 115 tower which was never completed, and then a temporary scaffolding stairway. In total, it is 216 steps to the top – and down again.
“If you have a fear of heights, we do not recommend visiting the roof,” the church authorities say. “It is not possible to turn back in the opposite direction once you start the climb.”
A number of city celebrities will be performing on stage on the Dam during Friday’s official opening, including DJs Isis and Joost van Bellen as well as former Eurovision hopeful and musical star Jeangu Macrooy.
The tower will be open almost daily from Saturday until November 2. Tickets cost €15 with reductions for children and students.
