More employers include religious holiday swaps in CAO

More employers are prepared to accommodate workers who want to swap religious holidays, Nu.nl reported on Monday, as Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr, or the end of Ramadan.
More employers are including the possibility to swap days off in collective labour agreements, or CAOs. For example, Muslims who want to take Monday and Tuesday off for Eid al-Fitr this year can offer to work on Christian holidays, such as Christmas or Ascension Day, to avoid eating into their overall number of holidays.
Civil engineering group Arcadis already has a swapping system in place, including cultural holidays, such as Pride, Ketikoti, carnaval and Remembrance Day, as well as religious holidays.
NXP, Carglass, PGGM, Transavia and Atradius have also included similar schemes in their CAOs.
A spokesman for employer’s association AWVN, told Nu.nl that schemes like this have been “normalised” over the last 25 years.
Supermarkets are the most flexible employers when it comes to swapping, he said. “That becomes very clear on Christmas Day. People with an Islamic background will be working and are getting days off at Eid al-Fitr. It’s a win-win for employers,” he said.
