Minister doesn’t back second term for UN’s Gaza rapporteur

The Netherlands does not support a second term for Francesca Albanese, the UN’s special representative in Gaza, foreign affairs minister Caspar Veldkamp has said in answer to questions from the fundamentalist Protestant SGP.
Veldkamp, a minister on behalf of the good governance party NSC, refused to meet Albanese when she was in the Netherlands earlier this year.
Albanese has been criticised for saying in a report to the UN in 2024 that the situation in Gaza is genocide and has described Israel’s claim to self-defence as a “false narrative”. She has also made controversial statements about Israel’s role in Gaza on social media.
“Some of the statements made by the special rapporteur on social media conflict with the code of conduct,” Veldkamp said. “The cabinet rejects these statements.”
Special rapporteurs are independent experts appointed by the UN human rights council to monitor specific human rights situations for a three-year period, which can be extended for a further three. Albanese’s first term in office is almost up.
Her reappointment can only be blocked if a formal protest is made to the UN’s human rights committee. Veldkamp did not say the Netherlands would do this and did point out that she has considerable international support for her work.
