Kampen heads to court over electricity for new schools

The Overijssel town of Kampen is taking legal action against its electricity grid company for failing to connect a new, energy efficient school complex to the national grid.

Grid company Enexis says there is no capacity to provide the appropriate connection for the two schools and childcare centre which are being built on the site.

Talks between the council and Enexis have now broken down and the council says it is heading to court over the issue. “It cannot be the case that such as sustainable school ends up connected to a generator, or cannot open at all,” council official Erik Faber told local broadcaster RTV Oost.

Enexis does have the capacity for three small scale connections but Kampen argues that this is not as energy efficient as a single, larger one for the A++++ complex.

Work on the project began last year and the school is set to open for the coming school year.

Earlier this month it emerged that investment of €195 billion is needed to boost capacity on the national grid. Some 10,000 companies are on the waiting list for a large scale connection.
