Five people have been injured in a stabbing incident close to Amsterdam’s main Dam square, city police confirmed on Thursday afternoon.

Eyewitnesses told local broadcaster AT5 that a girl and an older woman are among the victims.

One suspect has been arrested but police say a motive for the attacks is currently unclear.

A large area closed to the palace and Nieuwe Kerk has been cordoned off and photographs show an air ambulance on the Dam along with several ambulances.

The incident took place at around 3.20 pm outside a fabric shop on the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, next to the Nieuwe Kerk, according to the Parool.

“I heard a knock,” one of the shop workers told the paper. “Then I saw a girl had been stabbed in the back and a boy ran off.” A worker at the De 3 Fleschjes bar told the paper customers had seen an older woman being stabbed in the back before she fell to the ground.

Police have appealed for anyone with footage of the incident to get in touch.
