Dutch tax advisor to the stars must pay the IRS $15.5 million

Dutch tax consultant to the stars Frank Butselaar will have to pay the United States Internal Revenue Service some $15.5 million in unpaid taxes, a New York judge has ruled.
Butselaar was the go-to tax advisor for Dutch personalities who work abroad, including DJs Afrojack and Tiësto and model Yfke Sturm. He also worked for television presenters Jort Kelder and Linda de Mol.
The ruling is a result of a $25 million tax fraud perpetrated by Buntselaar on behalf of DJ Tiësto. The DJ has since paid back $9.5 million but the rest will have to be paid by Buntselaar, the judge said.
The consultant has already served 22 months of a 30-month prison sentence in the United States for setting up the tax evasion system, which included using tax havens such as Cyprus and Guernsey. He is expected to be released on July 14, four months early, for good behaviour.
Butselaar’s lawyers said he did not have the means to pay the IRS but the prosecutors said they are sure he would soon be solvent again, adding they hoped it would not be through giving people tax advice.
“We are very happy that we know when he is coming home and that this whole terrible episode in the United States is coming to an end,” his wife told the Financieele Dagblad.
When Butselaar returns to the Netherlands he will still face lawsuits, including one initiated by DJ Afrojack.
