Arsenal 2-2 PSV: Driouech moment of magic restores PSV’s honour

PSV salvaged some pride as they bowed out of the Champions League with a 2-2 draw with Arsenal in London, a week after their 7-1 humiliation in Eindhoven.

It looked like being a long night for Peter Bosz’s side when Oleksandr Zinchenko cut in from the right and left Walter Benitez no chance with a curling shot after just six minutes.

But the visitors dug in and gave the travelling fans something to cheer in the 18th minute, when Ivan Perisic collected a neat lay-off from Guus Til and found the top corner with a precise finish.

PSV were inches away from taking the lead a few minutes later when Couhaib Driouech’s shot was tipped round the post by David Raya.

Arsenal regained the lead on 37 minutes when Raheem Sterling kept the ball infield with some neat footwork before whipping in a cross for Declan Rice to head past Benitez.

The goalkeeper reacted well to stop Sterling adding a third just before half-time when he sprung the offside trap.

PSV pressed for an equaliser in the second half, with Isaac Babadi going closest with a shot to the top corner that Raya saved at full stretch, after Perisic made space with an angled run.

And their enterprise was rewarded with a glorious equaliser as Babadi slid the ball through to Driouech, who chipped the ball high over the advancing Raya and into the net.

Arsenal brought on some strong reinforcements, including last week’s master of ceremonies Martin Ødegaard, as both sides continued to create chances.

Sterling somehow found space in a crowded penalty area to fire a shot that Benitez managed to deflect wide with his thigh, while in the dying seconds Luuk de Jong headed Joey Veerman’s free-kick just wide for PSV.
