An 11-year-old boy who was taken to hospital with a gunshot injury last month in Rotterdam has died, police said on Friday.

The boy was found in a house in the Charlois area on February 16 when neighbours came running after hearing a loud bang, local broadcaster Rijnmond reported.

Several teens were seen fleeing the house and police later arrested seven of them. A 15-year-old and a 16-year-old are still in custody as part of the investigation.

Police said the shooting was most likely the result of an accident and that the teenagers had been playing with a gun which subsequently went off. It is still unclear how they came to be in possession of the weapon.
