Two new opinion polls highlight downturn in PVV fortunes

Two new opinion polls show a decline in support for the far-right PVV and a further drop in backing for the four-party coalition.

A poll by current affairs show EenVandaag suggests Geert Wilders’ party has fallen by four seats to 34 in the month to February 25, while the NSC has dropped from three to two. The PVV won 38 seats in the general election while the NSC won 20.

In total, the right-wing coalition would command only 60 seats if a general election were held tomorrow, the poll suggests. It currently controls 88 seats in the 150-seat parliament.

Confidence in the cabinet, which has been beset by internal struggles and divisions, has also plunged. Just 26% of voters now say they have faith in the alliance, including just over half of PVV voters.

Another poll from pollster Maurice de Hond also has the PVV on 34 seats, or about 23% support. It also gives the coalition 62 seats.

The biggest gainer in both polls is the CDA, which is on track to at least triple its support if an election were held tomorrow.

The VVD, which is part of the right-wing coalition, is fairly steady in the polls and the party on Monday was the only one to side with the opposition in a manifesto highlighting support for Ukraine.
